Fresh, creamy, bright, and packed with flavor, this Easy Homemade Guacamole is the kind of simple recipe you’ll find yourself making on repeat. Made with ripe avocados, fresh lime juice, garlic, red onion, and a little cilantro, this homemade guacamole comes together in just minutes with minimal ingredients and maximum flavor.

This recipe keeps things classic and uncomplicated. It is perfect for taco nights, nachos, burrito bowls, game day snacks, summer cookouts, or simply eating straight from the bowl with tortilla chips. The avocado stays creamy with just enough texture, while the lime juice adds freshness and balance to every bite.

One of the best things about homemade guacamole is how customizable it is. Keep it chunky, make it ultra smooth, spice it up with jalapeños, or load it with tomatoes and extra herbs. This easy version is the perfect simple base recipe that works for nearly everything.

Whether you’re serving it for Cinco de Mayo, taco Tuesday, football season, or a quick afternoon snack, this easy guacamole recipe is fresh, flavorful, and always a favorite.

Why you’ll love this recipe!

  • Made with simple fresh ingredients
  • Ready in under 10 minutes
  • Naturally gluten-free and dairy-free
  • Allergen friendly
  • Easy to customize
  • Perfect creamy texture with small avocado chunks
  • Bright fresh lime flavor
  • Great for parties, snacks, and taco nights
  • Budget-friendly and simple
  • No fancy equipment needed
  • Always better than store bought guacamole

What ingredients do I need?

  • Avocados: The star of the recipe. Ripe avocados create a creamy, buttery base with rich flavor and smooth texture.
  • Garlic: Adds savory depth and bold fresh flavor.
  • Red Onion: Provides crunch, sharpness, and slight sweetness.
  • Cilantro: Adds freshness and classic guacamole flavor. Optional for those who aren’t cilantro fans.
  • Diced Tomatoes: Diced tomatoes add freshness, brightness, and a little juicy texture that pairs perfectly with the creamy avocado. Roma tomatoes work especially well because they’re less watery than larger tomato varieties.
  • Lime Juice: Brightens the guacamole while helping slow browning.
  • Salt and Pepper: Enhance and balance all of the flavors.

Recipe Variations

  • Spicy Guac: Add diced jalapeños for some spice. The more seeds and ribs left on the pepper, the spicer it will be. To keep it mild, remove all the seeds and ribs (using gloves) before adding in.
  • Top with crumbled cotija cheese for extra richness.
  • Mix in corn or black beans for a heartier dip.
  • Add mango or pineapple for a sweet summer twist

Pro Tips

  • Use perfectly ripe avocados. The best guacamole starts with ripe avocados that give slightly when gently squeezed. Hard avocados won’t mash smoothly, while overly soft avocados may taste brown or mushy.
  • Try not to over mash. Leaving some avocado chunks creates better texture and a more homemade feel.
  • Mash the garlic and onion first.. Lightly smashing the garlic and onions together before adding the avocado helps soften their sharpness and evenly distribute flavor throughout the guacamole. I love using my Mortar and Pestle for this!
  • Add the lime juice gradually. Start with less lime juice and add more to taste depending on how citrusy you like your guacamole.
  • Salt matters for avocados. They need enough salt to really shine. Taste and adjust before serving.
  • Guacamole is best served fresh.
  • When storing, press plastic wrap directly on top of the guacamole. The less air exposure, the longer the guacamole stays green.

Can I Substitute?

Yes! Like always though, any substitutions made to the recipe can result in a change in texture and/or flavor.

  • Red onion: Replace with white onion or shallots
  • Cilantro: Omit completely, or substitute with parsley

Leftovers and Storage

  • Refrigerator Storage: Store guacamole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
    • For the best results, smooth the top flat with a spoon and press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole. Seal tightly with a lid. This helps minimize air exposure and slows browning.
  • Preventing Browning: Lime juice naturally helps slow oxidation, but some browning is still normal over time. If slight browning occurs, simply scrape off the top layer or stir before serving.

But, I Still Have A Few Questions…

How do I know if my avocados are ripe?
Ripe avocados should give slightly when gently squeezed but shouldn’t feel mushy.

Can I make guacamole ahead of time?
Yes, but guacamole tastes best fresh. If making ahead, press plastic wrap directly against the surface to minimize browning.

Why does guacamole turn brown?
Exposure to air oxidizes the avocado. Lime juice helps slow this process, but airtight storage is key.

Can I freeze guacamole?
Yes. Plain guacamole freezes best. Avoid adding tomatoes before freezing since they release extra water.

Do I have to use cilantro?
No. Cilantro is completely optional.

How can I make it spicy?
Add minced jalapeños, serranos, a little hot sauce, or crushed red pepper flakes.

Can I make this smoother?
Absolutely. Mash it more thoroughly or blend it in a food processor a little.

What should I serve with guacamole?
Tortilla chips, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, fajitas, burgers, grain bowls, or fresh vegetables. The options are endless.

Why do you mash the onion and garlic first?
It softens the sharpness and helps distribute flavor more evenly through the guacamole. I love using my Mortar and Pestle for this!

Can I use bottled lime juice?
Fresh lime juice gives the best flavor, but bottled lime juice can work in a pinch.

How can I ripen avocados faster?
To speed up ripening, place avocados in a paper bag at room temperature. Adding a banana or apple to the bag helps even more because the fruit releases ethylene gas, which naturally speeds up the ripening process. Most avocados will ripen within 1–3 days using this method.

Can I refrigerate avocados to slow ripening?
Yes. Once avocados are ripe, refrigerating them can help slow the ripening process and keep them fresh a little longer before making guacamole.
