  • Perfect for parties of all kinds
  • Great fall (or anytime) flavor
  • Uses a handful of pantry staples

What ingredients do I need?

  • Snack Mix
    • Chex cereal: Chex provides the classic crunchy cereal base for the snack mix and gives the maple cinnamon coating plenty of surface area to cling to.
    • Pretzels: Pretzels add salty crunch and balance the sweetness of the maple cinnamon sugar coating.
    • Mini club crackers: Mini club crackers add a buttery, savory element and a slightly different texture from the cereal and pretzels.
    • Honey teddy grahams: These add a little extra sweetness and a fun shape that makes the snack mix especially kid-friendly.
  • Maple Cinnamon Sugar Coating
    • Granulated sugar: Adds sweetness and helps create that classic cinnamon sugar flavor.
    • Light brown sugar: Brown sugar adds a deeper sweetness and pairs beautifully with the maple syrup.
    • Cinnamon: The cinnamon gives this snack mix its warm, cozy flavor.
    • Maple syrup: Maple syrup adds real maple flavor and helps create the coating for the snack mix.
    • Kosher salt: Salt balances the sweetness and brings out the maple and cinnamon flavors.
    • Unsalted butter: Melted butter helps coat the snack mix and adds richness to every crunchy bite.

Recipe Variations

  • Chocolate Maple Party Mix: Add chocolate chips or chocolate candies to the cooled snack mix for a chocolate-maple combination. Don’t add chocolate before baking or it can melt into the mix.
  • Maple Pecan Party Mix: Add pecans to the mix before baking for extra crunch and a delicious maple-pecan flavor.
  • Apple Cinnamon Party Mix: Add dried apple pieces after the snack mix cools for even more fall flavor.
  • Extra Cinnamon Party Mix: Love cinnamon? Add a little extra cinnamon to the coating for an even warmer cinnamon flavor.
  • Holiday Party Mix: Add seasonal candies or colorful sprinkles after the mix cools for a festive holiday version.

Pro Tips

  • Mix the dry ingredients together first. Make sure the cereal, pretzels, crackers, and teddy grahams are evenly distributed before adding the coating.
  • Whisk the coating together really well. Combine the melted butter, maple syrup, sugars, cinnamon, and salt thoroughly so you get an even mixture.
  • Drizzle the coating instead of dumping. Drizzle the maple mixture over the snack mix while tossing gently. This helps distribute the coating instead of leaving you with a few heavily coated pieces and a bunch of plain ones.
  • Use a really large bowl. Give yourself plenty of room to toss everything without breaking the cereal and crackers.
  • Don’t skip the stirring while baking. Stir the party mix every 10 minutes while it bakes. This helps the coating distribute evenly and keeps the snack mix from browning unevenly.
  • Keep the oven temperature low. The 250°F oven gives the coating time to bake onto the snack mix while helping everything become crisp without quickly burning the sugars.
  • Let the mix cool completely. The party mix will continue to crisp as it cools. Give it time to cool before transferring it to an airtight container.
  • Taste it once cooled completely. The flavors and texture settle as the snack mix cools, so wait until it’s completely cool before deciding if you’d like to add anything extra.

Can I Substitute?

Yes! Like always though, any substitutions made to the recipe can result in a change in texture and/or flavor.

  • Chex cereal: Use another similar crunchy square cereal if needed. The texture and coating may vary slightly depending on the cereal you choose. Substitute with the type of chex cereal used based on preference too.
  • Pretzels: Swap the pretzels for another crunchy, salty snack such as pretzel sticks or twists.
  • Mini club crackers: Use another small buttery or savory cracker if needed.
  • Honey teddy grahams: You can use another small sweet graham-style snack, although the flavor will be slightly different.
  • Unsalted butter: Salted butter works too. If you use salted butter, you may want to reduce or omit the added kosher salt.
  • Maple syrup: Use pure maple syrup for the best maple flavor. I don’t recommend replacing it with pancake syrup if you want that real maple flavor.
  • Light brown sugar: Dark brown sugar will work and will give the mix a slightly deeper molasses flavor.

Dietary Substitutions

  • Gluten-Free: To make this gluten-free, you would need to replace the traditional Chex, pretzels, crackers, and teddy grahams with products specifically labeled gluten-free. Check each package carefully, as the ingredients and manufacturing practices vary by product.
  • Dairy-Free: The butter is the dairy ingredient in this recipe. You can experiment with a dairy-free butter alternative, but I have not tested the recipe with one, so the final texture and flavor may vary.

Leftovers and Storage

  • Room temperature: Store the cooled party mix in an airtight container and enjoy within several days for the best texture.
    • It is important to make sure the party mix cools completely before storing it because trapping warm snack mix in a container can create condensation and soften the crunchy coating.
    • If you’re making this for a party, you can prepare it ahead of time and store it in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve.
    • For gifting, divide the completely cooled party mix into airtight jars, bags, or containers and seal well.

But, I Still Have A Few Questions…

Can I make this party mix ahead of time?
Absolutely! This is a great make-ahead snack. Prepare the mix, allow it to cool completely, and store it in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve it.

How long does homemade party mix last?
For the best texture and flavor, store the cooled party mix in an airtight container and enjoy it within several days.

Why do I need to stir the party mix every 10 minutes?
Stirring helps redistribute the maple cinnamon coating and allows the snack mix to bake more evenly. It also helps prevent the pieces around the edges from browning more quickly than the pieces in the center.

Why do I bake the party mix at 250°F?
The low oven temperature gives the buttery maple cinnamon coating time to bake onto the cereal, crackers, and pretzels while helping the mixture become crisp without cooking too aggressively.

Will the party mix get crunchy while it bakes?
Yes. The low-temperature baking process helps the coating set and the snack mix crisp up. It will also continue to firm up as it cools.

Why is my party mix still soft after baking?
Give it time to cool completely first. The snack mix becomes crispier as it cools. If it still seems soft after cooling, it may need additional time in the oven.

Can I use sweetened cereal?
You can, but keep in mind that the recipe already contains granulated sugar, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Using a sweeter cereal will make the finished party mix sweeter.

Can I use salted butter?
Yes, but if you use salted butter then I recommend reducing or omiting the additional kosher salt depending on how salty you want the finished snack mix.

Can I use dark brown sugar?
Yes. Dark brown sugar will give the party mix a deeper molasses flavor and slightly darker coating.

Can I use pancake syrup instead of maple syrup?
You can, but I don’t recommend it. Pure maple syrup gives you the best maple flavor. Pancake syrup will change the flavor of the finished snack mix.

Can I add nuts?
Yes! Pecans, cashews, walnuts would be especially good with the maple and cinnamon flavors. Add them before baking so they toast along with the snack mix.

Can I add chocolate chips?
Yes, but add them after the party mix has completely cooled. Adding chocolate chips before baking will cause them to melt.

Can I add dried fruit?
Yes. Dried cranberries, raisins, or dried apples would work well. Add the dried fruit after baking and cooling so it doesn’t become overly dry or hard.

Can I double the recipe?
Yes. If you double the recipe, make sure you use a large enough baking sheet or multiple pans so the snack mix can spread out rather than sitting in a very thick layer. You may need to rotate the pans during baking for even cooking.

Can I make this without the teddy grahams?
Yes. You can replace them with another sweet crunchy snack or increase one of the other ingredients.

Can I use different cereal?
Yes. This recipe is flexible and works well with similar crunchy cereals. Keep in mind that different cereals can vary in size and texture, which may affect how much coating they absorb.

Can kids help make this recipe?
Absolutely! Kids can help measure the dry ingredients and gently toss the snack mix. An adult should handle the hot melted butter mixture, oven, and hot baking sheet.

Why did my coating turn too dark?
The sugars can brown quickly, especially if the oven runs hot or the mixture sits too close to the heating element. Keep the oven at 250°F and stir every 10 minutes.

How do I keep the party mix crunchy?
Allow it to cool completely before storing it, then keep it in an airtight container. Exposure to moisture can make the cereal and crackers lose their crunch.

Can I freeze party mix?
I haven’t tested this recipe in the freezer, so I recommend storing it at room temperature in an airtight container instead.

Can I serve this warm?
You can, but allow it to cool enough to handle safely. The texture will become crunchier as the party mix cools.
