If you’re anything like my husband, then a snack mix is your undoing. He just can’t help himself from grabbing a handful when he sees a mix hanging around. So in honor of him, I created this Savory Snack Mix. It’s crunchy, salty, slightly sweet, cheesy, and packed with bold honey mustard flavor in every bite. Made with a combination of Chex cereal, pretzels, club crackers, pub mix, and Goldfish crackers, this baked snack mix is perfect for game days, road trips, movie nights, holiday gatherings, or simply keeping a container on the counter for everyday snacking.

Unlike store bought snack mixes, this homemade version allows you to control the flavor and create a perfectly balanced blend of crunchy textures. The buttery honey mustard coating bakes into every nook and cranny, while cheese powder adds an irresistible savory finish that keeps everyone reaching for another handful.

Whether you’re making it for a party, packing it for a family vacation, or gifting it during the holidays, this easy snack mix is guaranteed to disappear quickly.

Why you’ll love this recipe!

  • Perfect balance of sweet, salty, tangy, and cheesy flavors
  • Uses simple pantry staples
  • Great make-ahead snack for parties and gatherings.
  • Easy to customize with your favorite crackers and cereals
  • Bakes low and slow for maximum crunch
  • Kid-friendly and adult-approved.
  • Stays fresh for days
  • Great, easy recipe to include the kids too
  • Makes a large batch that’s perfect for sharing

What ingredients do I need?

  • Chex Cereal: Acts as the base of the mix and absorbs the honey mustard coating beautifully.
  • Pub Mix, or Bagel Chips: Adds hearty crunch and extra texture. Plain pub mix works best so the seasoning shines.
  • Goldfish Crackers: Adds cheesy flavor and a fun, nostalgic touch.
  • Thin Pretzels: Provides the perfect salty crunch.
  • Mini Club Crackers: Buttery crackers that help balance the bold seasoning.
  • Cheese Powder: Creates a rich, savory cheddar flavor throughout the mix (I used a Popcorn Cheese Powder I found at the grocery store).
  • Dry Mustard Powder: Delivers the classic tangy honey mustard flavor.
  • Paprika: Adds mild warmth and depth.
  • Onion Powder: Enhances the savory flavor profile.
  • Garlic Powder: Rounds out the seasoning blend.
  • Honey: Provides sweetness that balances the tangy mustard.
  • Unsalted Butter: Helps the seasoning coat every piece evenly and creates rich flavor.

Recipe Variations

  • Spicy Honey Mustard Snack Mix: Add ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper or chipotle powder.
  • Ranch Honey Mustard Mix: Add 1 tablespoon ranch seasoning.
  • Extra Cheesy Version: Increase the cheese powder to 4 tablespoons.
  • Dill Pickle Snack Mix: Add 1 teaspoon dried dill and ½ teaspoon citric acid.
  • Sweet & Salty Mix: Add honey roasted peanuts or candied pecans after baking.

Pro Tips

  • Coat every piece evenly. The key to an incredible snack mix is making sure every cracker, pretzel, and cereal piece gets coated in the honey mustard mixture. Drizzle the seasoning mixture slowly while tossing continuously, then spend an extra minute stirring to ensure there are no dry pockets hiding at the bottom of the bowl.
  • Stir the mix every 10 minutes while baking. This step is worth the effort. Stirring redistributes the coating as it bakes, helps prevent certain pieces from browning too quickly, and ensures an evenly crisp texture throughout the entire batch.
  • You’ll want to use a large mixing bowl. A bowl that seems too large is actually ideal for this recipe. It gives you enough room to toss everything without crushing the crackers and cereal. The more space you have, the easier it is to distribute the seasoning evenly.
  • Spread the mix into an even layer. Avoid piling the snack mix too thickly on the baking sheet. A single, even layer allows moisture to evaporate properly, creating the crunchy texture that makes homemade snack mix so addictive.
  • Don’t skip the cooling time. Fresh from the oven, the snack mix may still feel slightly soft. As it cools, the butter and honey coating firms up and the mix becomes noticeably crunchier. Give it at least 20-30 minutes before transferring it to a storage container.
  • Use fresh cheese powder and seasonings. Since the seasoning blend is the star of the recipe, fresh ingredients make a huge difference. Cheese powder can lose its punch over time, and older spices often taste flat. Fresh seasonings create a brighter, bolder flavor.
  • Watch very closely at the end of baking. Every oven is slightly different, so start checking for doneness around the 30-minute mark. The snack mix should smell toasty and savory with lightly golden edges, but it shouldn’t become dark brown.
  • Customize the crunch to suite your preferences. One of the best things about snack mix is that it’s endlessly adaptable. Feel free to swap in bagel chips, rye chips, oyster crackers, or your favorite snack crackers while maintaining roughly the same total volume.
  • The flavor actually improves after a few hours of sitting. If you’re making this for a party, bake it earlier in the day or even the night before to give the seasonings time to fully settle into the mix.
  • Store it the right way! Even the best snack mix can lose its crunch if stored improperly. Make sure it’s completely cool before sealing it in an airtight container. Any trapped steam can soften the mix.

Can I Substitute?

Yes! Like always though, any substitutions made to the recipe can result in a change in texture and/or flavor.

  • Chex Cereal: Use Crispix cereal instead of Chex cereal.
  • Pub Mix: Swap pub mix for additional bagel chips, rye chips, or oyster crackers.
  • Goldfish: Use Cheez-It crackers in place of Goldfish.
  • Club Crackers: Saltines, Ritz Bits, or mini sandwich crackers can be a substitute.
  • Honey: Use maple syrup instead of the honey for a slightly different sweetness.

Dietary Substitutions

  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free Chex cereal, gluten-free pretzels, and gluten-free crackers.
  • Vegetarian: This recipe is naturally vegetarian.
  • Dairy-Free: Use dairy-free butter and omit the cheese powder or substitute a dairy-free cheese seasoning.

Leftovers and Storage

  • Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
  • Freezer: Freeze in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag for up to 2 months. Allow to thaw at room temperature before serving.
  • Best Storage Tip: Place a paper towel inside the storage container to absorb excess moisture and maintain maximum crunch.

But, I Still Have A Few Questions…

Can I make this snack mix ahead of time?

Absolutely. In fact, it’s one of the best make ahead party snacks. Once cooled and stored properly, it stays fresh and crunchy for up to a week. The honey mustard flavor becomes even more pronounced after sitting for several hours as well.

Why does the snack mix need to cool completely before storing?

When the snack mix comes out of the oven, residual heat continues to release moisture. Therefore if you seal it while warm, that moisture gets trapped inside the container and can make the mix soft or stale. Cooling completely will help preserve the crunch.

Can I use different crackers and cereals?

Yes. This recipe is extremely flexible. Chex cereal can be replaced with Crispix, and you can swap in Cheez-Its, oyster crackers, bagel chips, rye chips, mini pretzel twists, or your favorite snack crackers. Just keep the overall volume of the mix similar for the best seasoning ratio.

Can I add nuts to this recipe?

Definitely. Pecans, almonds, peanuts, cashews, or mixed nuts all work wonderfully. If using raw nuts, add them before baking so they toast as the mix cooks. If using already roasted nuts, stir them in after baking and cooling.

What kind of cheese powder should I use?

Cheddar cheese powder is the most common option and complements the honey mustard flavor beautifully. White cheddar powder is another delicious choice if you want a slightly sharper cheese flavor. This one is great!

Can I double the recipe?

Yes. This recipe doubles very well. For the best results, divide the mixture between two baking sheets rather than crowding one pan. Rotate the pans halfway through baking to ensure even crisping.

Can I make this snack mix spicier?

Absolutely. Add ¼ to ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, chipotle powder, or crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning mixture. The sweetness from the honey balances the heat nicely.

Can I use yellow mustard instead of dry mustard powder?

Dry mustard is recommended because it provides concentrated flavor without adding extra moisture. If needed, you can substitute about 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard, but the texture may be slightly less crispy.

My snack mix isn’t crunchy. What happened?

There are a few possible causes:

  • It may need an additional 5-10 minutes in the oven.
  • It may not have cooled completely.
  • It may have been stored while still warm.
  • Humid weather can also affect crispness.

If needed, spread the mix back onto a baking sheet and bake at 250°F for another 5-10 minutes.

Can I make this recipe gluten-free?

Yes. Use gluten-free Chex cereal, gluten-free pretzels, and gluten-free crackers. Double-check labels on any specialty ingredients to ensure they meet your dietary needs.

Can I package this as a homemade gift?

This recipe makes a fantastic edible gift. Once completely cooled, portion it into decorative jars, cellophane bags, or holiday tins. It’s perfect for teacher gifts, hostess gifts, holiday cookie exchanges, and care packages.

How do I know when the snack mix is done baking?

The mixture should look lightly golden, smell toasted and savory, and feel mostly dry to the touch. Remember that it will continue to crisp as it cools, so avoid overbaking.

Can I make this sweeter?

Yes. Increase the honey to 4 tablespoons for a more pronounced sweet-and-savory flavor. You could also add honey roasted peanuts after baking for extra sweetness and crunch.

What should I serve with this snack mix?

It’s delicious on its own, but it’s also great alongside charcuterie boards, football party spreads, holiday appetizer tables, soups, sandwiches, or packed into lunch boxes for a savory snack.

    1. Hello! Cheese powder, or powdered cheese, is dehydrated real cheese that is turned into a shelf stable powder. You can find popcorn cheese seasoning at the grocery store often, or through online sites. I linked one from King Arthur Flour within the blog post! 🙂

    1. Hi! A pub mix is a combination of pretzels, mini breadsticks, bagel chips, corn chips, etc. You can usually find something (unflavored) at any grocery store. But if you can’t, just find your favorite crunchy mix in’s! Utz and Gardetto both have one!
