These Chocolate Chip Cookie Pastry Swirls are the ultimate dessert mash-up — buttery flaky pastry meets gooey chocolate chip cookie dough for a treat that’s soft, crispy, sweet, and a little salty all at once.

Imagine a warm, golden pinwheel that melts in your mouth with every bite.

Made with just a few simple ingredients — puff pastry, cookie dough, and an egg wash — these swirls are easy to make, family-friendly, and impossible to resist.

Perfect for a weekend baking project, a fun dessert with friends, or a quick holiday treat that looks as good as it tastes.

Why you’ll love this recipe!

  • Two desserts in one
  • Only 3 ingredients!
  • Crispy edges, soft centers
  • Kid friendly and fun
  • Perfect for any occasion

What ingredients do I need?

  • Puff Pastry: Buttery and flaky, it gives these swirls that light, crisp texture that contrasts perfectly with the soft cookie dough.
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough: The star of the show — rich, chewy, and full of chocolate chips. Use your favorite homemade recipe, like My Most Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies, or store-bought dough for convenience.
  • Egg (for brushing): Creates that beautiful golden color and glossy bakery-style finish.
  • Flaky Sea Salt: A sprinkle on top balances the sweetness and enhances every bite.

Recipe Variations

  • So many possibilities! Use any of your favorite cookie doughs. Peanut Butter cookie dough, oatmeal raisin, double chocolate, etc.
  • Double Chocolate: Use chocolate puff pastry or mix cocoa powder into your cookie dough.
  • Peanut Butter Swirl: Add a layer of peanut butter between the pastry and cookie dough for a salty-sweet twist.
  • Nutella Swirl: Add a layer of Nutella between the pastry and cookie dough!
  • Holiday Version: Add crushed candy canes or festive sprinkles to the dough before rolling for a seasonal spin.
  • Stuffed Swirls: Press a few chocolate chunks or caramels into the center before baking for an extra indulgent treat.

Pro Tips

  • Keep the puff pastry cold. Cold pastry puffs up better in the oven, giving you those flaky layers. If it gets too soft while working, pop it in the fridge for 5–10 minutes.
  • Don’t overfill with cookie dough. A thin, even layer works best so it doesn’t ooze out as it bakes.
  • Use a serrated knife to slice the rolled pastry log cleanly without squishing the layers.
  • Add extra cookie dough on top before baking for a gooey center and caramelized cookie edges.
  • Bake on parchment paper for easy cleanup and even browning.
  • Don’t forget the flaky sea salt!

Leftovers and Storage

  • Room Temperature: Store cooled swirls in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Refrigerate: Keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5–7 minutes to crisp up again.
  • Freeze (from baked): Freeze baked swirls in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a sealed bag or container. Reheat directly from frozen at 350°F for 8–10 minutes.
  • Freeze (from unbaked): Freeze unbaked, individual swirls (without the egg wash) for 1-2 hours on parchment paper. Transfer the individual frozen swirls to an airtight container or freezer-safe zip-top bag. Label with the date. When ready to use, bake from frozen. Place frozen swirls on parchment lined baking sheet, brush lightly with egg wash and bake at 375°F for about 5 extra minutes than original bake, or until golden and puffed. Unbaked, frozen swirls will keep for up to 2 months.
